What to consider before starting therapy in New York State:
Why do you want to start therapy?
What are you hoping to get out of it? Knowing why you want to start now and what you hope to gain from therapy will give you a headstart towards your goals. It can also give you an idea about what kind of therapist you may want to work with. You may want to work on your relationships, or find ways of reducing anxiety and anxious symptoms. Maybe you want to feel less stressed at work or better understand your family and childhood upbringing. Consider writing down what you hope to get out of therapy.
What qualities would you like in a therapist?
Knowing your preferences provides direction when trying to find the therapist who will be the right fit for you. Do you want your therapist to be LBGTQ affirming, a POC therapist, a therapist of a particular faith, etc? Do you want someone who takes insurance or are you open to therapists who are out of network and private pay? Do you want a therapist with a particular specialty? Check out my blog on finding the right therapist for some more info on how to find a therapist.
What might you get out of therapy?
As I mentioned before, there are many reasons people come to therapy. For some, benefits include improved mental health symptoms, thriving relationships and a set of skills and perspective not had before. In therapy, you may find yourself feeling safe to share in a confidential setting with someone who has some space from your situation. In therapy, you may learn new things and better understand yourself and others.
Are you ready to reach out?
You don’t have to have all the answers before beginning the process. If you’d read thus far, you might be curious enough to start.
